Sturdier than herbaceous plants and smaller than most trees, shrubs fill an invaluable niche in our gardens. They are extremely important for ecosystems and aesthetics alike. These are woody plants, which means they leave a visible above ground structure in the winter, and (as long as they’re not an evergreen shrub) lose their leaves when it gets cold.
The large majority of shrubs flower and many of these blooms are stand-outs for beauty and provide food for pollinators. Some flower in a large flush once a year, while others flower sporadically more than once in a season.
Coniferous shrubs keep their color in all four seasons and as such are vital to curb appeal and privacy. The large majority thrive best in full sun, slightly acidic, and well-drained sites. Many make colorful berries as a bonus.
You don’t need a massive maple to get your changing leaf vibes in autumn. Many shrubs have fabulous fall color. We dare say some are prettier during this stage than when they are flowering.
